Hi Art! Spring 2010 Classes
Hi Art! and Opera N Art!
Shostakovich’s The Nose (Ages 18 mos -12)
Now in its thirteenth year, Hi Art! and Opera ’N Art open the landscapes of contemporary art and music
to children of all ages—from toddlers to preteens.
Classes alternate visits to the best “grown-up” art at New
York’s major galleries and museums
one week, with a creative burst of hands-on art,
music and movement
the next. Studio time offers a fluid, mixed-media
approach that focuses on a modern musical masterpiece and a tantalizingly
delightful hands-on art-project, both of which continue to unfold over
the course of the semester.
Based on a pedagogy that privileges process over
result, Hi Art! supports a child’s instinctive desire to create, develop his or her own ideas and to realize
their potential as a gifted individual. The
program artfully combines a broad range of recognizable skills
and materials (gross and fine motor skills, design, language, cultural
history, musical repertoire, art theory,
critical thought, self-expression, dance and choreography) with the “invisible” skills that build sensitive, insightful
children who are independent thinkers.Younger children work alongside their adult companions each at his or her own pace and big kids are always free to go it alone!
Join us in percussive madness as we take Shostakovich’s wild ride through Nickolai Gogol’s extraordinary tale about a man who wakes up one morning only to find he has lost his nose. 10 weeks of musical laughter, stupendous gallery hops and inspired artmaking.
